Tyres

Tyres

Tyres are the most important aspect of you car. There are several checks that need to be regularly carried out to prevent damage or excessive wear. At least once a month you should carry out the following checks :

  • Tyre pressure
  • Tread depth - the legal minimum is 1.6mm
  • Bulges or cracks in the tyre
  • Uneven wear

You can adjust the tyre pressure yourself at home or any petrol station, but if you notice any of these other issues then you will need to replace your tyres straight away.

MOT

Keep yourself safe and legal whilst driving. Owners of all cars registered after 1960 need to put their car through the annual MOT test.

An MOT will cover areas such as those listed below.

Air Conditioning

Your car air conditioning system will potentially lose approximately 10% of its refrigerant every year. Replacing the lost refrigerant is known as "regassing".

In most manufacturers recommend you service your vehicle air conditioning every two years.

Tyres

The part of your tyre that’s actually in contact with the road is only about the size of your hand. Your safety, comfort and fuel economy depends on that very small area.

You should  regularly maintain them to ensure they perform at their best. It’s important because you rely on your tyres for

  • Emergency braking
  • Control on wet surfaces
  • Road holding in different situations

The legal minimum tread depth in UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width and round its entire circumference. Check the depth of the main tread grooves in several places across and around the tyre. When the tread surface is worn to these levels the tyre is at the legal limit and should be replaced.

If they are approaching the legal limit or if you have any doubts, get them checked professionally by a tyre specialist.
